Established Clinical Indications of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) recognizes a defined group of clinical indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Depending on the diagnosis, medical necessity, and individual insurance plan, certain conditions may also qualify for insurance coverage.
Air or Gas Embolism
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Clostridial Myositis & Myonecrosis (Gas Gangrene)
Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome & Acute Traumatic Ischemia
Decompression Sickness
Central Retinal Artery Occlusion
Selected Problem Wounds
Severe Anemia
Intracranial Abscess
Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections

Beyond Established Clinical Indications of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is also being studied and utilized for additional applications beyond established clinical indications. Evidence varies by condition, and each patient is individually evaluated based on medical history, available research, and personal health goals.
Clinical screening and a prescription are required before beginning HBOT. Applications outside established indications are generally self-pay and may not be covered by insurance.
